Michael Corcoran has quietly returned to the indie music scene with two captivating new EPs—More Weight and Grade Grubber—both available now on Bandcamp and streaming services. These releases mark his first solo work under his own name, blending lush shoegaze textures with ambient electronics and subtle pop sensibilities. In the early ‘90s, Corcoran was a pivotal member of Providence, Rhode Island’s Difference Engine, a band that carved its niche in the shoegaze genre with the 1994 release of Breadmaker. The album’s fusion of human emotion and machine-like precision resonated with fans of My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive, earning it a cult following. Corcoran’s innovative use of Emax samplers and his cyberpunk-inspired approach to music production set the stage for his future endeavors. Now, decades later, Corcoran’s solo work continues to push boundaries. More Weight, recorded in his Providence home studio and released in April 2024, is a four-track exploration of desire, utopia, and the supernatural. The EP’s analog synths, electronic pianos, and atmospheric effects create a haunting soundscape that envelops the listener.Building upon this foundation, Grade Grubber, released in June 2024, introduces lush, ethereal shoegaze guitars to Corcoran’s sonic palette. The five-track EP delves deeper into the dream pop realm, offering a rich tapestry of sound that is both nostalgic and forward-thinking.Both EPs are available on Bandcamp and major streaming platforms, inviting listeners to immerse themselves in Corcoran’s evolving musical landscape.
